Lightfair, North America’s annual trade show and conference dedicated to lighting topics, has announced its 2019 Call for Speakers. The submission period for seminar and speaker proposals runs July 11 to August 10, 2018 (11:59 p.m. EDT).

Two contemporary buildings were recently added to the Provo Missionary Training Center (MTC) in Utah, in answer to the Church of Latter Day Saints’ missionary growth needs. The MTC has long been a busy educational facility, training local and global missionaries for the church.

USGBC and Informa Exhibitions announced today that respected human rights lawyer and humanitarian Amal Clooney will deliver the opening keynote remarks at this year’s Greenbuild International Conference and Expo, taking place November 14–16. Clooney will speak at the Opening Plenary on Wed., November 14 from 9–10 a.m. at the LEED-certified McCormick Place Convention Center. Registration for Greenbuild is now open.

Leaving Light + Building this year, two things were clear to me. First, smart is a prefix the lighting industry has embraced. Second, marketing teams have embraced the liberal use of the acronym “IoT” in everything from light fixtures to plastic polymers and even paint. 

Solid-state lighting (SSL) is bringing new capabilities to lighting, in part because light-emitting diodes (LEDs) can be easily packaged together on a printed circuit board to form sources that are multicomponent and multifunctional. But the long-term performance of such systems hasn’t yet been fully investigated, despite the fact that next to energy efficiency, long life is the most publicized advantage of SSL. That’s why the U.S. Department of Energy is funding an ongoing series of studies on the reliability of LED lighting products conducted by RTI International, an independent research firm.
